Shaffer Fish Bowl Springs

   Shaffer Fish Bowl Springs

Route 66 leaves Ed's Camp and continues up the old Gold Hill Grade into the Black Mountains. A few hairpin curves later is the site of Shaffer's Fish Bowl Springs. This is an easy place to miss. The spring is not marked. Look for stone steps seemingly cut into the cliff on the left as you head towards the summit of Sitgreaves Pass - those steps lead to the "fish bowl". Legend has it that at one time in the past some creative traveler introduced goldfish to this spring. There is a small clearing along the road here where you can park. The delicate Monkey Paw Orchid seemingly growing out of solid rock right at the spring looks oddly out of place. Such a pretty, water-loving flower is the last thing you would expect to find in this harsh desert country.
